Research

Did you know that we take part in NHS research?

Beacon Medical Group is proud to be involved in clinical research studies within primary care.

We are part of the National Institute for Health Research Clinical Research Network for the South West Peninsula. Its aim is to improve the care for all patients by obtaining evidence for better prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases in Primary Care and we are actively involved in recruiting for a number of studies currently taking place.

Dr Alex Trotman, Research GP at Beacon Medical Group, said: “Research is a core function of the NHS and integral to continuing to advance treatments and care for patients. Beacon has decided to offer research opportunities to its patients because, put simply, evidence shows that patients cared for in a research-active organisation have better outcomes.

“Ultimately, clinical research means patients get access to new treatments, interventions and medicines. Investment in research means better, more cost effective care for patients.”

Many of the research studies we currently offer to patients focus around areas such as disease diagnosis and prevention, management of long-term illnesses such as diabetes, prevention of future ill-health, and treating common conditions such as heartburn.

Current Studies

VICTORION-1 PREVENT

Is your high cholesterol level increasing your risk of having a major cardiovascular event?

Consider joining the VICTORION-1 PREVENT study

The VICTORION-1 PREVENT study will assess if an investigational medication can prevent cardiovascular events (such as heart attacks, strokes, procedures to improve blood flow, and death) in adults who are at high cardiovascular risk and who have high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (also called ‘bad’ cholesterol), but have not yet had a major cardiovascular event.

We are looking for people to join this study who:

  • Are 40 to 79 years of age
  • Have high LDL cholesterol levels
  • Have not experienced a major cardiovascular event
  • Are considered high risk of having a major cardiovascular event in the future

Diabetes in Primary Care: Improving Classification

This Practice is currently participating in a research study sponsored by the University of Exeter, in collaboration with the Universities of Nottingham and Bristol, to improve the diagnosis and classification of diabetes in adults.

Your Practice team will use a computer programme to check that patients have been diagnosed with the correct form of diabetes.

Some people with diabetes will be contacted for a follow-up appointment to review their diagnosis and treatment.

If you do NOT wish to be included in this research, please advise your Practice team.
